Unreal Tournament 3 - 9/10
My Review of:
By K-Man
You’re out fighting with your team doing who knows what and then all of sudden this monstrous tripod vehicle comes upon you. What do you do? Nothing, because you’re already dead. From the developers of the hit Xbox 360 game, Gears of War, Epic Games Present Unreal Tournament 3. UT3 (for short) is basically a first person shooter (or FPS) game where it takes place in the future. UT3 is mostly an online game but the campaign mode will have the elements of what modes every online game always have like Capture the flag, Team Deathmatch, and more. Campaign mode includes bots and it has up to 4 difficulty levels; Easy, Medium, Hard, and Insane. If you’re bored kicking bot arse then you can play a LAN game instead and kick your friend’s arses instead.
You might think it’s kind of like Warhawk only the character look like they eat steroid like crazy but it’s not. You play as James Hawkins or otherwise known as Reaper. You take control of Team Ronin, a four- squad based team where you must take vengeance against Necris for destroying your homeland and comrades. And that’s when all the fun of fragging finally begins. The campaign includes 5 chapters, although 4 of them allow you to choose between two missions. The last chapter will strictly be straightforward. During campaign mode, if you do something achievable in one certain mission, you’ll receive a play card. The purpose of these cards is to give you and advantage in another mission. I recommend you save them for when you are having trouble on a mission.
Story – 8/10
Like I mentioned above, you play as James Hawkins or otherwise known as Reaper. You take control of Team Ronin, a four- squad based team where you must take vengeance against Necris for destroying your homeland and comrades. The whole campaign mode is like playing a LAN game but instead has bots. Some of the modes in Capaign that will be included is
Capture the Flag,
Team Deathmatch, and even
Vehicle Capture the Flag where you use vehicles to try and kill the enemies to egg their flag. The story although can get repetitive sometime since that’s what campaign modes really offers. It’s like playing in a tutorial for beginners to UT3 online and you don’t know it. In every mission, there’s four of you, but if receive a play card, that will give you an advantage as sometimes the opposing can have at least 2 or more of them making it unfair. There’s more to the story but you’ll have to find out for yourself.
-Nope that’s not War of the Worlds you’re seeing, that’s the Darkwalkers attacking a city and it’s up to you to show them and the Necris who’s boss.
Gameplay - 9/10
An FPS game, 'nuff said. Nah, there's more to than that. What's great about the gameplay is of course the kick as weapons and vehicles. If you played
UT2004 then some of the weapons will be familiar to you. Some weapons UT3 will be including is
AVRiL,
Bio Rifle,
Flak Cannon,
Link Gun,
Rocket Launcher,
Shock Rifle,
Sniper Rifle, and the
Redeemer. These weapons are unique in every way but they you can still pwn ass with them. Each weapon also has an alternate trigger. Each one may make the weapons a lot powerful or it may not do anything at all. Not all weapons in the game can kill but some may help you reach a certain goal in the game. Helpful weapons like the
Translocater can help transport you almost anywhere far way. It can even help you at tough times when you are about to be killed by the enemy. Also the game fortunately support
mouse and keyboard controls so if you don't feel like playing with the controller, then get the keyboard and mouse and start pwning like you always do on your computer.
The only bad part about the gameplay is that there is no melee attack! I mean what if you get too close to an enemy and you try to kill them but you can't because you have the rocket launcher as you only weapon and if you fire you'll end killing the enemy and yourself as well. Melee attack is a must for any FPS based game.
- The Rocket Launcher wil not only kill your enemies but you can also destroy their vehicles.
Now the vehicles in this game can be either be small for fast transport but there are mostly big ones as you’ll be killing a lot. The huge vehicle will make go
”WOW! I am so glad I got this vehicle first and not the enemy!’ The one vehicle you’ll always have on you disposal (except in deathmatch games) is the hoverboard. It’s really useful in long terrains, if you just got the other team’s flag and need to quickly escape to your base, or if there’s no other vehicle available around you. The vehicles however are made up into two different types, the Axon vehicles and the Necris vehicles. During campaign mode, you’ll only be using Axon vehicles but at certain points in the game you can either use or even hijack the vehicles of the Necris. And if you’re lucky, you can even take control of one the most dreaded and feared vehicle of Unreal Tournament 3. The
Darkwalker Is a giant vehicles of the Necris that walks on all three. It attacks with high-powered beams that you wish you don’t want it to be in it’s path. Don’t even get near it because it'll cause you to be paralyzed thus sending you to your doom.
- The Darkwalker is one vehicle that you wish the other team wouldn’t control.
Graphics – 8/10
Now the graphics in this game aren’t going to make you go “WOW!” however they aren’t sore to eyes. The parts in the game that has really good graphics is the cut-scenes. It’s bright. Detailed, and swore you kind of there/ But once you play the game there isn’t really much to see. Even on certain levels, there aren’t too much detail on the terrains nor the far away parts of the level. But you won’t notice it much since you’ll be busy killing the opposing team. Pretty much, this game can also be good on a gaming PC as the graphics there are much better.
-Don’t stare at the scenery too much or else you’ll be seeing your limbs in front of you all of a sudden.
The way vehicles explode in the game is brilliant. Brilliant enough to make you laugh like a maniac. It feels even better if you destroy a Darkwalker because once you destroy, you’ll feel as though you can take on anything. There isn’t too much gore in the game but the way gore appears in the game can be funny at time. Like if you use a rocket launcher on the enemy, their limbs will fly everywhere. Or if you use the Link Gun’s alternate fire, you can melt the skin off from the enemy until there’s a skeleton laying on the floor. Overall that’s one way to make it up if the gore isn’t violent enough.
- Yes that’s right, make the vehicle explode. It’s good for your explosion-craving soul
Conclusion
Overall, I really enjoyed the game. Despite missing an important FPS element and more creativity an online, the game would still good if you’ve enjoyed UT2004. Unless if you’re mostly a PC gamer, then this game wouldn’t be for because of the graphics and gameplay. What’s mostly enjoyable about Unreal Tournament 3 is the Darkwalker. This is a good satisfaction if you’re craving power or if you’re tired of people of people making fun of you for being short. You can use the Darkwalker to show that even short people can look powerful. But besides the Darkwalker, I also loved the weapons because I thought some were unique and some were that I never even thought of. I just hope that if they do ever make a Unreal Tournament 4, I hope to see more new weapons and a new online modes. As always thanks for “reading” and happy gaming!
