Call of Duty 4 - 8/10

To all those who are hiding under the rock of fuzzy wuzzy games with bears in them Call Of Duty 4 is the latest in the line of Call Of Duty games. With the failure of Call of Duty 3, more commonly known as the rag that hides in your local game store, Call of Duty 4 is a militaristic masterpiece bringing the theater of Call of Duty into the modern day.

Being an avid player of Call of Duty 2 on PC and discovering my PC was too slow to run the newest installment on settings that didn't make the characters look like polygonal sock puppets, I decided to opt for the PS3 version.

Ok, let me first say that I loved this game and everything in it. Even the multiplayer is balanced, fun and not full of people who absolutely mutilate the other team (more commonly found in PC FPS games). So well done Devs this time. The game starts off in an American boot camp where you soon start your first mission. Immediately you are awed by the clear crisp nature of the graphics. That is, if you have a TV to support it. Playing it on a standard PAL CRT TV (also known as 576i) is an absolute chore. Fonts are so tiny and jagged you would need to be a delusional mouse to read them. Fortunately I had an LCD monitor which provided me with a more enjoyable HD experience.

Back to the missions. The missions are immerisce and interesting to play, (unlike the Medal of Honor series). You get to play as both the americans and British from missions originating from the conflict started in an unamed arab nation. You could skip the whole story and feel like you have not missed a thing but against my usual mash x to skip cut scenes, I was quite engaged with the surroundings the game presented to me. There are some, what I like to refer to as, "live action scenes" where you might assume the body of another character to playing a soldier dying of nuclear radiation.

Game play is also rather immersive with bullets flying through the air and tons of allies. These allies are rather bad shots and seem to shoot blankly at targets waiting for you to kill everyone and run forward while they sit around and die. But sometimes they shine through as a true shimmer of light specially in the stealth missions where they co-operate and even talk to you acting upon your response to their advice.

Enemies basically stand around waiting to be shot while firing blankly at you and your allies. This does not mean they are not dangerous though. The sheer number and the fact they always seem to have an infinite supply of men ready to take their place provides you with quite a challenge and a thrill. Its exciting running to the next piece of cover while hundreds of bullets zoom past you.

Fighting these enemies provides you with an infinite list of options from rifles, pistols, shotguns, air strikes and attack helicopters. While you develop favorite weapons after a while, there aren't many weapons which feel like fillers making each one interesting to try.

For those who have never ever played a call of duty game before, health bars are abolished and replaced by a system known by Halo fanboys around the world. You can take only so much damage over a period of time (a few seconds). While you wonder how a man can manage to recover within a few seconds from a mortal bullet wound, its nice to find a game where you can't run and gun finishing the level in Olympic marathon style because your have 200 health and 200 amour.

What more can I say? The levels are designed wonderfully with nice strategic hotspots you can take advantage of, audio effects were spectacular and missions offer unique gameplay challenges which can be accomplished in a short time (10 to 20 minutes).

My only problem with this game is that it is short. Hardcore gamers could finish it in 1 day leaving them with "bonus mode" and an epilogue which is completely irrelevant to the story. What's worst is that it stops so suddenly. Maybe it was due to the fact that each level presented something completely unique and I was used to the fact most games wear the same features over and over again and leave you in boredom.

So I moved onto multiplayer which is peer to peer based leaving me rejoining 10 times to get in a game with Australians in order to get a decent ping. But when I did finally get into a server it was fun, lag was low and weapon unlocks provided me with an incentive to keep playing. After adding some friends from COD 4 I was able to get invited to a game quite quickly saving me the frustration of constant rejoining.

To end with I must say half of the game is multiplayer, so if you intent to buy this game for single player only you will be shocked when it suddenly ends on you leaving you with little else then a mission screaming "Why the f*ck did anyone put me here".
