Super puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix - 6/10

Now I don't really know what makes brick games so interesting that people wish to actually but them. People get paid to lay bricks. People get paid to tile, and build houses already. So when people ask me if I have played the latest brick game I look at them in a confused fashion. I try not to take it as an insult that they would expect me to stray from my usual "make living things dead" type games to more "lets fit colors together in geometric patterns like a remedial maths student" type games.

I'm not saying I never play brick games. But they are a last resort. Sure there are some actual excellent brick games out there where you may be entertained for a few minutes dare I say a few hours, but Super Puzzle fighter 2 HD Remix is not one of them.

The gameplay consists of making chains of colors or larger blocks by combining small blocks of the same color then getting rid of them by using a round colored block of the appropriate color against your blocky array. When you get rid of your blocks your "player" performs an attack you never see because you are too busy concentrating on laying down some slabs... Apon being attacked, a waterfall of blocks rain into your tetris slide which is apparently meant to make things harder as when you have no more room on your slide, you die.

But dieing isn't much of an issue in this game. The blocks which cascade down (damage bricks???) after an attack have a cool down allowing you to build massive chains which potentially end the game in 1 "attack". It is not common for you to suddenly perform an uber attack and win the game in a very WTF kind of manner. This is due to the cooldown effect on your damage bricks. A circle block immersed deep under damage bricks can be a potential time bomb based nearly entirely on luck.

Due to this being a 2 player game and the AI being easier to whip John Howard, It becomes very boring very fast. Strategy isn't hard so it only took me 2 plays through the game until I could beat solo player on highest difficulty. And since the bloody game wont connect to the online servers I really don't have any incentives to continue playing it.

SPF2 isn't the first game to implement a competitive brick game. While playing this game I longed for my Lumines UMD back. While Lumines was also a brick game and relied on competitive gameplay to make a show, it had a great puzzle game feel to it. Especially in the challenge modes which presented an objective puzzle based solo play experience.

My experience with SPF2 only lasted 1 hour max before I decided it wasn't worth hard drive space and started complaining about the 15 dollars I just spent.
