Well wireless is more convenient as it is Wire-Less. But is less reliable and can cut out and reduce in signal stength.

I have both, for online games get your house wired, so you can plug you network hub into the wall and it comes out on the other side to plug in your ps3. I get no lag.

wireless does work fine, but wired I find it just more reliable. and it is a constant connection. sometimes things can cause interference with wireless that can cause a game to drop out.

It depends on your router/access point and other wireless networks around at the time. I use wireless to play COD4 online (lagless) and also use it to stream HD media from my PC to my PS3.
