DVD v Blu-Ray

I know many of you out there would by now have a rather impressive DVD Collection. DVD movies have been in the mainstream for 10+ years and now after all is said and done with the HD war here we are with Blu-Ray as the winner.

With the PS3 offering Blu-Ray to a number of consumers and of course those HD Nuts out there who went out and got standalone players, Blu-Ray sales are steadily rising across Australia.

The major concern I have when I speak to people about the Blu-Ray format is normally from movie buffs. "I have spent thousands of dollars on my DVD collection, why would I want to replace them with Blu-Ray movies" and to those of you who are in this boat, I agree. You have been building your collections for years, it seems pointless to re-purchase those again, what happens when something replaces blu-ray?

The best advice I can offer those of you out there is research, research, research. Some Blu-Rays out there are amazingly detailed, especially for their age. A Clockwork Orange was made in the 70's and the Blu-Ray transfer is simply stunning. Other front runners are Transformers, The Matrix Collection, Kill Bill and The Simpsons Movie.

On the other hand, there are some movies where the transfer just simply doesn't justify replacing your DVD version. For instance Goodfellas is shockingly bad on Blu-Ray, in fact the DVD version is a better looking product. The original Die Hard offers much better sound, but picture is just the same.

So if you are sitting on the fence on the whole Blu-Ray, or replacing your amazing collection of fantastic films seems daunting and expensive, make sure you do some research people, and you will find that you won't have to replace all of those classic films!
