Rumour: Sony Considering Premium PSN Subscriptions

One of the biggest things the PS3 has going for it is the PSN online service being free, compared to the $80 a year asked for the gold version of Microsoft's Xbox Live. However, that could all be set to change, if a survey from IPSOS Online Research is anything to go by.

"Sony is considering offering a premium PlayStation Network subscription in the future. The subscription offering would provide new premium features you could choose to pay for and are in addition to the features currently available for free such as access to online multiplayer gaming (current features would remain free)," states the survey.

It suggests that a premium PSN service would allow gamers to play full PS3 game trials for an hour, and as many PSone Classics as their heart desires, as well as cross-game voice chat. There could also be online storage, tokens to purchase goodies off of PSN and exclusive premium PSN content through existing services such as Netflix.

There's a range of different proposed subscription models on offer. The most expensive is USD $69.95 (AUD $78) per year, which is $10 more than Xbox Live. Check out the bottom of Kotaku's post for the supposed full range of options, and what they may include.

Consider the non-Admin MyPS3 members, please, mate.
Not including myself, but a lot of members put A LOT of effort into their news article (writing it up and finding it, etc.) and FOR WHAT???!!!! Or what for? To never see their NEWS ARTICLES hit the FRONT PAGE?

I know I'd pay for a premium service like XBOX Live...But what I WOULDN'T pay for is to...PLAY ONLINE/ONLINE MULTIPLAYER (get online, or even use the PS3 web browser).
So, basically I don't want to START paying for stuff that I 'used' to get FOR FREE.

So unlike Micro$oft, SONY might give US OPTIONS, which is awesome! Choice is good!!!

This is really even news worthy. We have known for ages that there is a rumour for a PSN Premium Service to come next year. The GOW3 article that MeganFoxLover wrote deserves to be on the front page but this doesnt.

I don't mind paying premium, it be good for hardcore PSN account owners. Trying free trial PS3 games is good it beats renting games and the free games (PSone) with this subscription is way better than XB Live, It gives PSN account owners the freedom to choose and playing online is still free so the cheapskates r happy so its a win - win situation.

But i'd pay for it. $78 per year isn't that much; it's pretty much the cost of one game.

I have just been playing my mates XBOX for the past week and the 2 features i would pay for would be Multiplayer Online and Cloud Storage Space for for games and saves.
There are also a few more on that list that catch my eye but those are the main ones.

member only in game content. Fk that sh*t off. esp the news about DLC now being announced 2 months before the game is even out. How some companies handle DLC is beyond me - its not the same as expansion packs where you actually get yer moneys worth.... exceptions are things like Burnout...

I could see them trying to turn certain areas of home into members only sections which will only kill.

Hour long full game tests. Esp in this country, that service would benefit only a few who had high quota. Games are 500 megs in size. Seriously, whatever happened to a good ol demo without having to beg for it in beta tests etc.

The only thing that I could consider getting PSN premium would be for quota free subscription.
the content on the psn is disappointing - I dont even like how the psp and ps3 content is compiled together.

A lot of users on the ps3 network chose this service because it was free unlike the xbox user experience.

I can understand movie downloads and music download being part of a subscription model but if they think holding out certain option is in the benefit of playstation users than I'd like to bollocks to that.
Cross game chat only for psn premium users? You gotta be joking!

It seems to be tailored to those users who have money and want to spend more online esp with the notion of discount and tokens.

User to user challenges? whats that mean? You can already invite users to games. are they talking about private servers?
