Call of duty 5 - 9/10
Seeing how Gaetano has already written a most excellent review of the game, I will review the online play.
Online FPS's are a dime a dozen, but CoD WaW stands out because, apart from killing other people, you have many things for which to play for and open up. This is good and very addictive and if you get hooked, you will spend more time playing online than in single player.
You start your online career as a private, with the aim of being promoted up through the ranks, Sargent Captain Major etc etc.
When you start out you have a limited number of available weapons to use and you can play in a area called bootcamp, which is basically 4v4 team death match, which is limited to level 8 and under. This is kinda like a training area for noobs, where everyone pretty much has the same weapons. As you make more kills, score more points, you get promoted. Promotion is good.
Goodies are opened up, like new guns and new packs. Packs are extra abilities for your character. You have 3 pack slots, and every slot has lots of different things you can choose. So, you might decide to have in pack 1 an extra grenade, in pack 2 you might choose camouflage, which makes you invisible to recon planes and in pack 3 you might choose double tap which makes your gun fire faster. These packs can be used, in conjunction with different weapon upgrades to create all sorts of different builds for you to use. So for example, if you like to sneak around unseen and unheard like a ninja, you could equip your weapon with a supressor and use camoflage and dead silence(footstep noise greatly reduced)and you have a hard to find stealthy character.
Weapons. All the guns found in the single player mode are in multiplayer. The bonus is that as you get more and more kills with each gun, you open up attatchments for each weapon. These can be things like scopes, bigger ammo cartridges flash hiders etc etc.
There are 13 different maps available to play on, with a variety of different game modes. Modes like capture the flag, team death match ground war are among the many different gameplay modes.
Scoring points can be acheived many different ways. Killing an ememy player will net you 10 points, less if someone assists you, then the points are split and the guy who fires the last bullet gets the kill. There are challenges to do, that when you complete them you can get more points. You can get kill streaks, which do these things:
Kill 3 Enemies in a row - Recon Plane will display Red Dots on Radar! BEWARE OF CAMOUFLAGE
Kill 5 Enemies in a row - Activates an Artillery Strike you can place anywhere on the map.
Kill 7 Enemies in a row - Release the dogs. These are a pack of attack dogs who hunt out opposing enemy's and attack and kill them.
The game has a pretty good skill matching system so most games end up usually fairly well balanced. Overall, this is a fun highly addictive online enviroment, which rewards you the more you play.
I give this a 9/10
:)
