Blazing Angels Squadrons of WWII Reviews \ Detail

Blazing Angels Sqadrons of WWII - 6/10

Blazing Angels Squadrons of WWII is a combat flight simulator ps3 game developed by Ubisoft and was released in 2007. In the game you play as American Squadron leader who controls 3 other wingmen who all have their own special abilities that they can perform to help you topple the Nazi regime. Players can fly up to 38 historically accurate WWII aircraft in both single and multiplayer missions. The game features squadron based combat and during the course of the 18-mission campaign players will have to use cunning tactics to defeat Nazi aces. The game features a historically accurate storyline with battles taking place over London, Midway and Nazi occupied Germany.

In the game you will assume the role of an American fighter pilot who is stationed in England. Players get the chance to fly through some of the wars greatest air battles such as Pearl Harbour, Midway, Berlin, London as well s some 20 others. Whilst the game does do a decent job of recreating WWII air battles the storyline seems to lack any real depth and you never truly feel as if you are playing as a WWII pilot. The games missions range from defending allied bases, performing bombing runs as well as swatting enemy fighters from the sky. Die-hard WWII combat flight simulator fans will find the game quite good but unless you are a huge fan the game seems tired and old with its standard missions and a sometimes sickly heroic storyline.

One of the things Blazing Angeles does do right is recreating the flight controls. The games controls are very simple and have a good amount of sensitivity. The easiest way to play the game is by using the PS3’s SIXAXIS motion sensitivity function. This will help you immerse yourself in the gritty air combat while offering an even less complicated control scheme. One thing you need to keep in mind when playing this game is that your flying WWII era aircraft, not a modern jet fighter so except some lack of sensitivity and slow acceleration. Blazing Angels offers a variety of including WWII era jet fighters, Bombers as well as a huge variety of propeller driven fighters.

Blazing Angels offers three supportive pilots each with a different ability. Tom helps distract determined enemies by taunting them. Frank can take out several enemies in a short amount of time when ordered to attack and Joe actually repairs a player's aircraft mid-flight by issuing an on screen button command the player must enter correctly. Once the supportive wingmen has done their special ability there is a amount of time when it cannot be issued again. The repair mechanic is defiantly the most unrealistic part of the game seeing as it can bring the players aircraft back from the brink of destruction back to pristine condition in a matter of seconds. The commands can be issued more than once in a mission making the game very easy and unrealistic. The player can literally tear through dozens of enemy planes and ground vehicles without sustaining any damage.

Multiplayer saves the game from being put into the ps3 bargain bin though. There are many different multiplayer modes for you to enjoy both in split screen and online play, which offers support for up to 16 players. The multiplayer modes including Ace battle, where the player is “it” until he is shot down. Of course there are also the basic multiplayer modes such as deathmatch, assault the base and capture the flag.

Whilst Blazing Angels Squadrons of WWII isn’t exactly a bad game the combat flight simulator series on the ps3 just seems to be lacking any real excitement and seems to be a tired game type. The game didn’t really change that much in it’s transition from xbox 360 to ps3 although it was nice to see some new content. The use the SIXAXIS and multiplayer are defiantly all that save the games. I’m glad I got this game for free :s
