Happy New Year - But how do we say it?
First of all Happy New Year from all of us at MyMedia.
Now that the pleasantries are out of the way we have bigger issues to tackle. What do we call 2010? We MUST refer to years in 2 digits, it's our thing. '09, '08. '07 etc has worked very well, and will continue to work in future decades, but 2010 ruins everything. Do we simply say "10"? Probably not because that sounds stupid. Think about it, can you imagine telling your kids a story that starts with "back in 10"?
Other options include 0-10 - pronounced "oh ten". It's a bit confusing, and while it's three digits it's still two numbers and may very well work with out current system. However will it work for 0-11, 0-12 and so on? Or do we have to revert back to "11" then? And how should we write that? I only went for "0-10" to help with how it should be said.
When we want to be formal we say "two thousand and nine" for the current year. Will we say "two thousand and ten" or "twenty ten" reverting back to last century's method?
Then we have a bigger issue. What will the decade as a whole be called? We've had the Eighties, the Nighties and now the Naughties but what's next? It can't be the Teens (and Teenies sounds like some type of tween emo pop group you want to harpoon in the eye), surely, as 2010, 2011, and 2012 don't fit into that. The Tenies also sounds a little strange. So what will it be?
We're prepared for the Twenties, but that's 10 years away. Right now we have less than 24 hours to make a very big decision. HELP!
