MyMedia Featured Review Explanation
Below is a basic summary of the guidelines we use to write a review at MyMedia. We use these guidelines in order to write coherent, consistent, critical and factual reviews that are fun to read. Our reviews are written by 100% unbiased writers who have no emotional or personal attachment to the game, console, developer or publisher, so you can rest assured that what you read and the score we give for a game is honest and truthful.
Remember, our reviews are merely a critical opinion. Our summary of a game isn't the final verdict, it's purely our opinion. We provide this opinion because we believe we have a sound and professional knowledge of the gaming industry. Opinion is one of the greatest things we have in this society, and we hope you can appreciate our opinion as we would yours. You may not agree with our review and that's fine. We expect that!
Review Layout - Our reviews are broken up into sections that may or may not be titled, depending on the reviewers writing style. Generally, we go in this order: Gameplay, Graphics, Sound, Value and an Overall verdict.
THE SCORING SYSTEM
We use a 10-decimal scoring review system at MyMedia (8.7, 7.3, 9.9 etc.)
Coming up with a final score for a game doesn't always fall onto the average of all of the compiled scores for each category. If the reviewer believes that the average score rates the game fairly, then they will use it. However, there might be an instance where the gameplay received a 9, however every other aspect of the game receives a 6. Those scores of 6 will bring the average down. Everyone knows that gameplay is the most important aspect of a title, so the reviewer might decide that, although the graphics, sound and value are fairly decent, because the gameplay is exceptionally good and the game offers an original and fantastic experience, they may decide to give a score substantially higher than the average. This might also be the case if gameplay receives a score of 3, yet value, graphics and audio receive scores of 9.5. The average of that game is going to be fairly high, yet the gameplay is fairly low. Therefore, the average score may not accurately represent the quality of the title as a whole. In that instance, the reviewer may decide the rate the game closer to the gameplay score of 3, rather than the average score of all of the categories.
10 - Masterpiece
A score of 10 means perfection. If a game receives a score of 10, that means that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the title and the experience the game offers is beyond anything ever experienced before. The graphics, value and sound are all of the highest caliber of that gaming generation and the production value is substantially high. 10 means 100% perfection with absolutely no problems whatsoever.
9.5 - 9.9 - Brilliant
A score between 9.5 and 9.9 is as close to perfection as you can get. It offers an exceptional and original experience, yet there are some very minor issues with graphical presentation and/or audio.
9.0 - 9.4 - Awesome
A score between 9.0 and 9.4 means that game offers a very good gaming experience. There may be some minor issues with gameplay and value.
8.5 - 8.9 - Great
A score between 8.5 and 8.9 represents a game that offers great value for money and has great gameplay but has some noteworthy issues on any of the four fronts.
8.0 - 8.4 - Very Good
A score between 8.0 and 8.4 represents a title that does plenty right and but may have a low value quality or issues on the gameplay front.
7.3 - 7.9 - Good
A score between 7.3 and 7.9 means the gameplay is good but may suffer from some medium-major problems on the gameplay, value and/or graphical front.
6.7 - 7.2 - OK
A score between 6.7 and 7.2 represents a title with an even number of good and bad things. It may do some things really well, but may also do other things really poorly. It may have one exceptionally fantastic aspect, but too many minor problems that effect the experience.
6.0 - 6.6 - Decent
A score between 6.0 and 6.6 doesn't mean it's a bad game, but it offers an inconsistent experience with some issues that may effect the experience.
5.5 - 5.9 - Hmmmm...
A score between 5.5 and 5.9 is borderline pass and may do more wrong in reference to gameplay than it does right. It may also suffer from poor production value and low value rating.
5.0 - 5.4 - Pass
A score between 5.0 and 5.4 represents a game that just passes but may be worth a miss or rental. It doesn't offer anything original and may have a few good things, but its problems heavily out weight its positives.
3.0 - 4.9 - Meh
A score between 3.0 and 4.9 represents a game that does little to nothing right and offers a very mediocre gaming experience.
0.0 - 2.9 - Burn it
A score between 0.0 and 2.9 deserves to be burnt.
