Awesome Foreign Language Films

I just saw a post about Anime... added my 2cents and thought a thread on awesome foreign language films is a good idea. Especially considering the number of people that who anime eventually wander into asian cinema!

So come on people... give us your favourite foreign films. Not just restricted to Asian cinema... but film in general.

I personally have about 8 our of my top 10 films of all time that aren't english.

Here's a few to get it started:

Warlords - Jet Li - not released in this country. Got a BR imported from the UK... cost me AU$65. Would have happily paid $100 for it! This is my most favourite film at the moment.

Shinobi - not really based on the game, but it does take the concept of Shinobi being someone who is trained as a warrior from birth. Awesome!

Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman - one of Takeshi Kitano's best films! Its a samurai film.

Battle Royale - starring Takeshi Kitano... but he didn't write of direct. Still extremely cool!!!!

Violent Cop - early Takeshi Kitano... god I love that guy!

Sonantine - more Kitano!

Europa - directed by Lars Von Treir... what a masterpiece of cinematography!

Fritz Lang's 'M' - definitely not for everyone, but I just love this film.

Cinema Paradiso - Italian film about a young boys love for film! Love it!

Pan's Labyrinth - got a BR imported and it made the film all the better. The detail in

Then there is the cross overs which have English audio tracks.

Hero, House of Flying Dagger, Crouching Tiger, Fearless.

I personally prefer to watch these in the original languages and they are great as well... but not as good as the ones in my first post!

So come on peeps... what other awesome foreign films do you know about!

I also liked the Orphanage, but it wasn't as good as Pans.

I just watched the trailer for Red Cliff! Looks wicked!!!!

Similar to Warlords in that it has epic battles and a love on the side.

It has Tony Leung and Takeshi Kaneshiro and they have both starred in some great Asian cinema lately (Hero, House of Flying Dagger)... and its directed by John Woo!!

His asian films are so much better than his Hollywood ones. That has just reminded me of an old film he did called 'The Killer.' It has Chow Yun Fat in it and I believe that to this day, it still holds the record for most bullets used in a film!

HA! LOVE IT!

Oh yeah forgot to mention Oldboy. Though we dont have many Korean titles here I see.

But yeah Red Cliff I&II is way better than Warlords imo.

Haha im not playing them yet! I would be thou if my game came from the UK- but i would be playing them old school on the Mega drive Psn game comes out soon i think

I loved it how every body part that got cut off transformed into a mutated substitute......the guy losing his penis went abit too far but especially considering what they replaced it with... and wtf was with that woman in that zip up bondage costume that had blades for arms and legs....honestly watch this film and you've seen everything lol... xD
