The Last Guy Reviews \ Detail

The Last Guy - 7/10

The Last...Guy! Yes. You’re the last guy in this modern take on the old “Snake” game.
The world has been overrun by zombies, all kinds of zombies! People are trapped everywhere, all across the world and you must save them! You’re actually a zombie, but a good one and have a nice red cape to show this off.

The main idea of the game is walk around to buildings and stand out the front until the desired amount of people have left the building and joined your line. You then make your way to the escape zone where the rescued people become safe and after the time limit has expired, they will be extracted. If you got enough people saved within the time, you win and advance to the next level.
No, it’s not that simple. It’s never that simple or else it wouldn’t be fun. While you run around collecting people to rescue you must avoid the zombies which now walk the streets of the world. There’s a vast variety of zombies which you must dodge, each with their own specific specialty. While rescuing the people your line will grow and grow reaching the thousands and by now, the line is long. You must attempt to manoeuvre the streets with this long line, making sure you don’t die and the zombies don’t break your line and diminish your chances to save the human race. But you’re not armed, scattered around the map are pickups from increased stamina – which allows you to sprint or group your line closer together, stop the zombies in their tracks and much more for you to find out.

Your first impressions on this game will most likely be something along the lines of “what the hell?” which is not a bad thing. This game is very unique, even though it’s a modern take on snake; it’s like nothing else out there. The game has a fairly solid balance of challenge and being able to actually complete the level. Sometimes you will find yourself playing the same level over and over again just to pass because they can get quite hard and will challenge both hardcore gamers and casual gamers. While playing you will notice that your best friend is going to become the “X” button as this reveals where the civilians are located but this will not show where zombies are. The key is to find a nice balance of the thermo vision and normal vision. Once you have that on key, you really need some strategy. Using the first screen before actually tackling the level and then developing a plan is a must. Overall, all these tools make this game more fun that it would be without them.

A really good thing I found in the game is the locations. Think of it as a HD Google Earth with zombies. You can go from Tokyo Japan to the Opera House in Sydney. Yes, I was very excited to see some Aussie in it too!

There is really no problems or bugs in this game. Sometimes it can be quite stressing to have an intricate plan only to later find out that there is some stupid barricade blocking you from going that way. Half the time there is no need for it and just annoys the heck out of anyone playing. Though that’s not a real problem, it can push you sometimes.

As I said, this game really has no problems with it. There’s a great balance in this game and collecting 1000 people in 5 minutes can be either very hard or very easy. It all comes down to how effectively you use your surroundings and plan your movements before tackling a level. Though you can get through most levels without any planning at all, it will help you a lot.

In each level there’s 4 “V.I.P.’s” to find which you must track down and rescue for extra points and some secret levels. This gives you a nice reason to go back and play, but you really wouldn’t go back and play it again unless you really enjoyed yourself. Apparently there’s 9,999,999,999 survivors to go after too but that’s only for real men.

The “Google Earth” type gameplay makes it fun and in HD there’s nothing to worry about. Simplistic look is what they went for and achieved it well.

The sound in The Last Guy is fun and entertaining. Nice sound effects with funny ways of saying “Go Go Go!” and “The Last Guy” still crack me up. A nice pumping sound track keeps you moving.

Sometimes the gameplay can get old but generally, there’s a lot to do. The controls are perfect and simple to keep you in the game and again, the game achieves it well.

With 4 V.I.P.’s in each level for you to collect you may see yourself going back and doing it. If you do, there are extra levels for you to unlock but not a big reason to play through again unless you need to kill some time.

The Last Guy is a really fun and sometimes really hard game. It’s another one of those unique games on the PSN Store that make you proud to own a PS3. With plenty of levels and innovative, strategic game play, this game is great fun for both the casual gamer and the hardcore gamer. At $15 it’s a great buy and you should definitely consider buying it. If you’re still sceptical, check out the demo. It will show you all that The Last Guy is all about.

I just adore the way you structure your reviews rivalZone, it just looks so professionably designed, loved it! A great read as well, really got me hooked in. I had no idea this game was zombie related, and with the zombie fetish that i have, i will definitely be giving this a go, love the old skool look and style of it.
