Battlefield 1943 - 8/10
Battlefield 1943 is the remake, and “modernised” version of battlefield 1942, which many FPS gamers loved. One of the best battlefield games is back, and now on the next-gen systems, as well as PC which should be released in 2010. Battlefield 1943 incorporates the new “frostbite” engine as well as it being upgraded to the next version which implements even more destruction on the environment around you!
Battlefield 1943 feels and plays similar to Battlefield Bad Company, with almost the same controller schemes. The game is an online only game, which was similar to battlefield 1942 (with the inclusion of BOTS and LAN play and a conquest mode). The game is pretty straight forward, with 3 classes and 3 maps. The game has an infantry class, an assault class, and the sniper class. All these classes carry a secondary item as well. The game uses a health and ammo regeneration system instead of the old classic magazine rounds and 100 HP healths. This makes the game feel more of an arcade game, which it is. The maps are large, and supports up to 24 players in one server. One downfall of Battlefield 1943 is that it doesn’t have a lobby system to easily navigate and find games. But rest aside, most of the time you will connect to a descent server.
The game play mainly consists of; using vehicles, capturing flags and killing the enemy. There is a new air raid system which is incorporated into battlefield 1943 which allows one player to go into the air strike room and control the planes and where to strike the missiles. Although the planes don’t fully manoeuvre (there are 3) it is still a useful way to take out the enemies bases. There are lots of hiding spots in the game for snipers, and the artillery machines are still in the game. Even those boats from battlefield 1942!
The graphics of the game is similar to that of battlefield bad company. The game has good environments and destruction effects. The visuals won’t stun you but you wouldn’t expect that out of a PSN game. The fact that the game is downloadable means it attracts a much lower price and entices people to purchase it digitally. This is a good marketing tactic made by EA games. There was a challenge before which proposed each console had to total a certain amount of kills (I think it was 43 million) and a new mode with a new map would be unlocked. Now, I’m not too sure on what to do in this mode but its mainly concerning the use of planes, so if you like flying try the Air Superiority mode out with the new map Coral Sea.
While the game doesn’t seem too offer much upfront, it surely gets you addicted fairly easily. Similar to those online shooters like Counter-Strike, a few maps and guns won’t bore you, unless you like a broader variety of things to do. With a free trial included before you decide to purchase the game, meaning that if you download the game for free, try it out for 30 minutes and then purchase the game unlock, for $19.99 you don’t have to download anything again. So this again, is a good strategy by EA. The only negative things that I have experienced with battlefield 1943 is that it freezes and you have to restart your PS3, and a few glitches which show black boxes randomly, as well as seeing under the map.
Here is my verdict
Graphics 8/10
Game play 8/10
Sound 8/10
Online 9/10
Replay Value 9/10
Overall 8/10
Overall I think that Battlefield 1943 is a great remake of the original, and for such a small price tag, why not get it? With game play that will make you become addicted and even more destruction than battlefield bad company, this isn’t a PSN Downloadable game to miss. Oh, did I forget to mention that there are trophies too?
