Terminator Salvation developer interview
Terminator Salvation is one of the most anticipated movies of the year and with it comes the official game of the movie on XBOX 360, Playstation 3 and PC, which is now available. Check out our interview with some of the development team below to get an insight to the game.
1. What exactly is Terminator Salvation The Video Game about? Does it follow the plot of the movie or does it delve off into different storylines set before or after the film?
GRIN: The game takes place about 2 years prior to the film. So the player will get a lot of background information regarding the relationship between the main characters and how Connor evolves into the resistance leader he is in the movie.
2. Where in the Terminator timeline does the game fit in?
GRIN: Around 2016
3. Time travel is an integral part of the whole Terminator mythology. Does it appear in the game, even just purely mentioned by the characters?
GRIN: Considering that the game takes place during the period when the resistance is getting organized, time travel will not be something that you see in the game.
4. In terms of co-operative gameplay, what can we expect? Will Connor be leading a squad of soldiers in the game like he does in the movie?
GRIN: There is a single-player campaign or you can choose to play specific scenarios.
5. We’ve seen many different Terminators in the first few movie trailers – the Harvester, MotoTerminators, as well as the bulky “easy to spot” T-600’s that Kyle Reese described in T1. Are we going to see them all in the game? Any Terminators/machines that are exclusive to the game?
GRIN: The T-7-T is an example of a Terminator only seen in the game.
6. It would obviously take a hell of a lot of firepower to shoot down a T-600. How did the development team incorporate/balance that into the game without making it overly difficult.
GRIN: This was the toughest thing to address. Creating an action game where you fight superior enemies is indeed a challenge. That is why we have a weaker section on some of the enemies and the possibility to damage the enemies so that pieces of armor fall off and expose the enemies’ weaker inner circuitry.
7. The future war was hinted at in the first three movies but this is the first time really we see it on film. What kind of challengers (if any) did the team come across when trying to create the environments for the game?
GRIN:We got a lot of reference material from the movie and worked closely with the movie team. As with most movie games the biggest challenges are the rapid changes that happen from time to time. It is often tougher for a game developer to address big changes that it is for a movie team.
8. Will Kyle Reese or any other characters from the film being appearing in the game?
GRIN: You will fight alongside some of the characters that are in the movie. The game takes place prior to the movie so it is a honest effort in creating a true cross medial experience.
9. What can we expect on the multiplayer front with Terminator Salvation?
GRIN: 2 player co-op through the full single player campaign.
10. The first two Terminator films had a strong focus on human emotion and fate (or lack thereof). The future war and Skynet often took a back seat to the relationship between a woman and her protector (T1), or a young fatherless teenager and an emotionless robot (T2). With the game narrative, can expect that same sort of emotionally charged story?
GRIN: We focus on the transition from hopelessness to the point where the player ignites the first spark of faith for humanity.
