Rejoice gamers!... even though it is not a really big deal, an official statement on Naughty Dog's Twitter account dismissed previous reports of a 1.75gb mandatory installation:

"We can confirm there is NO mandatory installation for UNCHARTED2"

So there you have it, now when Uncharted 2 ships in October you will not have to worry about the dreaded mandatory installation.

Why are installs dreaded?? I would rather wait 20 minnutes at the start and get quicker load times, than not have an install.

Agreed.

With my 320GB HDD I would love a few large installs for quicker, smoother gameplay!

Depends on the game and the way its programed. Some games have none what so ever and some can have 5 gig.

Good news, but 1.7GB is surprisingly small anyway GTA IV, BIA: HH, MGS4 are all upwards of 4GB's....

The easiest way to solve any concern on the amount of disc space taken up while loading any game, is to get a bigger hard drive. It is so easy to upgrade the HDD in the PS3, everyone should do it.
