News \ Universal and Paramount move to Blu-Ray gaining momentum

Bill Hunt, at the Digital Bits is reporting that his "second to none" sources informed him that both Universal and Paramount are in the process of going blu.

Recent public statements offered by Paramount denied the rumour that the company is going to Bluray - this is due to the same contracts that prevent them from switching now, to prevent them from confirming the rumour.

Bill's sources tell him that while Paramount could make an announcement any day now, Universal's won't come until February -- at the earliest -- because "their contract period with the HD-DVD camp expires at the end of January."

This surely will be the last nail in the coffin for HD-DVD.

The blu-ray drm has already interfered with legitimately purchased movies as soon as sony have the war in the bag its a certainty the drm will get much worse. Watermarking, bd+, hardware drm and region coding price fixing thats just some of the reasons why HD-DVD was the superior format.

For the record Krak a "fanboy troll post" is devoid of fact or relevant argument, I'd say your post was a perfect example of a "fanboy troll post".

..............did you actually read my post? "Krakenfood, do some research before opening your mouth" I didnt open my mouth, i typed. All i typed was, that i think Blu Ray is the better format as i have both formats and have used them on an LCD TV, which is more than i can say for you *probably only have HD DVD do you?* it is the better format, simple as that. You obviously dont have one hence the "HD DVD is better because of this and that" bs that you spew out. Warner Bros and Co must think Blu Ray is pretty clever too. Me a fanboy? Firstly im a female and secondly, explain to me how i can be a fanboy when i own both consoles? I think the only fanboy troll here is you, to me you seem pretty cut about HD DVD losing this "war" hence the whinging, then again, i didnt expect much from someone who uses "Yourmum" as a username and "dogs ****" as your profile name.

YourMum said: I see you point callan, I'm no toshiba fanboy (do they even exist?). It just gets on my nerves when people go yeah blu ray rocks, HD-DVD is gay etc etc. Without knowing ANY of the important facts, anyone who has spent 5 serious minuets researching the formats will know that blu-ray is far less consumer friendly than HD-DVD.

I have no trouble swallowing the "pill" peoples ignorance, well thats a different story. Thankfully I'll be able to adapt quite nicely with out blu-ray, I'll never accept drm that dictates to me how i can use media that i have paid to OWN not license.

All depends on what you're prepared to spend your hard earned on i suppose, either way, regardless i could care less about the format war, im pleased to see that Blu Ray is winning because its great news for PS3, which is what i want considering i paid quite an amount of money for the system, like Kraken said though, both formats played on an 1080p capable LCD, and you do notice a difference, im pretty greedy when it comes to quality, i always want the best, thats why i go with Blu Ray, you have your own reasons to go with HD DVD, like many, not many care about watching your standard dvds, but i certainly do. When you say peoples ignorance, i'd hardly call people thinking Blu Ray is the better format, ignorant, its all choice at the end of the day.

Doest really matter if these two companies dont go the way of Blu Ray, it will hardly matter now, Blu Ray is wiping the floor with HD DVD and thats the fact at the moment. Even though it is obviously a hard pill to swallow for some. Why doesnt everyone just buy a PS3 and a 360, you will have both formats then, which means you're winning out either way

Krakenfood do your research before you open your mouth. The fact HD-DVD was a finished format and people who bought the first gen players are able to access any special features that may be released in the future unlike blu-ray that saw a large majority of 1st gen stand alone players unable to play newer added content.

YourMum said: Nice rumour spreading Entice! Line up lemmings its time to hit the cliffs.

Warner has confirmed it will be going blu after may thanks to a sizable bribe from sony, unfortunately the sheeple don't understand the drm $hitstorm sony intends to unleash on the consuming public once its dominance is undisputed.

Thanks to blu-ray region coding expect to pay more than the rest of the world for your movies in the future, unlike HD-DVD which had no region coding meaning imports were a option if aussie prices weren't in line with world prices.

Sony own a large number of film studios so there vested interests couldn't be any more clear, its a shame they bought their "victory" because HD-DVD was superior in format and consumer friendly ness if it wasn't for bribes Toshiba's format (which has a far superior movie attach rate) would have won out once the fanboys had been successfully de programmed.

Its still far from over yet, the next few months should yield some very interesting results in the HD media war.

After wading through all this babble i was about to stop reading it all until i saw this line.

HD DVD was superior in format.....

When was it superior than Blu ray? Have you actually watched a Blu Ray title on a 1080p LCD and compared it to HD DVD, there is a hell of alot of difference, you wont understand until you watch both formats on a LCD, Blu Ray is by far the better format, fanboy troll rant or no fanboy troll rant.

Well for Universal and paramount it works out nicely as a people are obviously hungry for their movies so they'll just buy like mad (I know I will), but also there will be the customers that will drop hd-dvd when these two do and then buy up again (or possibly keep their hd-dvds and by another set), sounds crazy but its plausible. Who here owned Records and then owned the cd equivalents etc.

There is no doubt in my mind that this will happen, im pretty sure Paramount and Universal are quite aware that HD DVD will soon be pretty much a dead format *if not already* and they will jump to Blu Ray, they would be mad not too really.

Thats just because they've signed a contract recently tying them to HD-DVD. Contracts are nasty business, you cant just go saying things or their could be legal ramifications.
Apparently Paramount have a "get out clause" though written into their contract, which judging by this article they are trying to exercise.
Once that is done they can say whatever they want.
