Its techinichally not a medal though. More of a badge.

Reynaldo: It has to be on to run Folding @ Home. If you set it in the settings of F@H, you can have it so that the program starts after the PS3 being idle for 10 minutes.

sometimes i feel like im waisting my time contributing, but hey, u never know if Stanford can muster a breakthrough tomorrow! Maybe not the big 'key' to Cancer etc. But they are slowly but surely pickin up more & more about protein folding & its effects, which is leading to smaller breakthroughs in research.

Just think that if even if double the amount of PS3s were doing Folding@Home... the work units that are dealt out to PS3s would be getting done twice as quick, & more 'work units' could be drawn up, leading to better, faster research! This is why i encourage you guys with PS3s to send me an email about Folding@Home on your computer.. for Windows 5.04 is best installed as a 'service'. This way, when your using your computer, your helping out as well, boosting the Project even further!!!

My PS3 at work, DSE_352_PS3 has been outa solid action for a while now, last couple weeks have been on & off, with a couple of work units obviously being uploaded late (no points being rewarded for Work Unit).

I really wanna get a PS3 of my own, so it can fold@home until it packs it in! I wanna wait though, until a more revised version comes out, bit smaller maybe, atleast if the internal boards & that are smaller, im gunna make my own custom case for it anyway.

Keep Folding away guys, your doing Cancer research a great favour!

nah its all good, i decided to get the Wii, i banked on PS3 being a failure to be honest, but it has surprised me, & i really want to get one now eh. I'm really into it because i've been Folding@Home on this computer for 12mths now, & i noticed how big of an impact the PS3 was making on the project. We're pretty close to cracking a PetaFlop now, sittin at a steady 922 TeraFlops. Work hard guys, recruit etc. & we can push that figure to 2 PetaFlops easily by this time next year (by that time i'll have had my PS3 chuggin along chewin through the work units!).

ENVIRONMENTAL DEBATE: just tell your power company you wanna switch to green energy like i did, that way your power use won't be comin from fossil fuel sources.

CURING CANCER VS. NOT DEBATE: i haven't had cancer or has anyone in my direct family, but i bet if i did, i would be running this program 24/7... no you dont HAVE to run this program, & the majority of people don't, but thats because the majority of ppl dont know about Folding@Home.. & the ones that do should cease the opportunity to help out. As for world population, diseases are being cured or partially cured all the time, our quality of life & life expectancy has increased in the past century, & i dare say will continue to do so, even if not by much... our population is goin to continue to grow, with or without cancer around, & its better not to have it round, yeh? I think if major diseases like Cancer are cured, efforts after could be focused on sex ed. for third world countries, stop them breeding like mad, and producing kids with horrible HIV etc.

Just remember guys, to help out, you don't have to spend $30 on your power bill each month for Folding@Home, just run it once a day, or twice a week, save a bit on power, & you can still help out. The best way to ease the pressure on 100,000 24x7 folders, is to attract another 100,000 to join in, that way the 24x7 guys can scale back a bit, save a bit of money & Folding@Home will be just as strong.

My PS3 at work has been goin well, 5 work units in last two days, pretty good considering i have to make sure power isn't switched off n other crap.

check this new news site / blog for Folding@Home project updates - folding.typepad.com/
They're goin to great lengths to develop the multi-core SMP client for the computers, which lets them scale the program for 4,8,16 cores etc. This is good news for the PS3 version as well, as things learned from the SMP development can only further help with improvements in the PS3 version (not that the two are identical, but im sure they could find similarities somewhere)

i probably come off a little nasty with above post sorry.. just to remember though, everyone has a choice to donate their efforts to Folding@Home or not & i just hope more people can take-on the idea of distributed computing, & help the rest of us try & solve some diseases!

MyPS3 AU - thanks again for your support, i know the guys at Stanford, PandeGroup (Folding@Home) really do appreciate the contribution that Playstation 3 users make, not because they're (nearly) 10x as powerful as computers, but because its all too easy just to pass off Folding@Home as a waste of time & not find out about it, contribute to it, & see what its all about.
