Folding@home Update

We are all very excited here for the release of the new Folding@home (FAH) client for the PS3! This latest update addresses issues in two major areas: user requests and improving the accuracy of the core that we have running on the SPU. In addition, we totally revised the rendering engine for the molecules and added a more sophisticated display format, which is closer to the imagery you find in biology textbooks. This actually required a protocol change and the protein needs to be described in much more detail from Stanford University’s side of things.

We’re lucky to have a very dedicated group of FAH users and many of you have submitted requests, and ideas, for improving the application. While it’s challenging to address every issue raised, we did try to address your burning ones, especially those that interfere with the science or slow down the performance of the PS3 computation network.

Another really cool feature that was also requested by the FAH community is the support of PSP Remote Play. In this latest version we enabled this feature so you can now access FAH remotely from your PSP (that you al

lol thats funny, i thought there had to have been a F@H update... I occasionally have to quit the program & restart it again to upload a work units results (it tends to stall a little) and i tried doing this today & it looked frozen, so i pulled the plug on the PS3. When i rebooted i went to folding@home and started, and it asked to be updated, i thought, ooh beauty, they're serious bout this program, good, but then it asked me to update the firmware as well for the PS3, and i kicked myself for pullin the plug coz i thought somehow, it had reset itself to factory condition! lol luckily it did all its updatin and i went back in, sended the previous work units results and i noticed that the F@H logo usually in the bottom right of the screen seemed to be randomly in the middle of the screen, i thought, surely this is a screensaver? so i checked.. yep must be, thats pretty cool! lol thats my story lol

Cheers

oh & i got another good link for u guys to checkout about PS3's power & its relation to Folding@Home - www.playfuls.com/

note: i copied this from a F@H post on OCAU Forums

Improvement: Advanced Participation Mode
An advanced participation mode has been added to Folding@home™ for PS3™.This mode allows Stanford to send simulations of varying computational lengths to users of Folding@home™ for PS3™.
Because the simulations in this mode can take significantly longer, Advanced Mode is only recommended for contributors who run Folding@home™ for PS3™ for at least eight hours per day.
Note: In Advanced Mode, an energy graph during the simulation will also be displayed. In this graph, the blue line represents the total energy level of the protein over time. The red line represents the average temperature level at which the current simulation is run.

Oh ok. I am on advanced mode now. All of us top folders should go on there, cos we do it so much.

it would be great if you could run F@H in the background when you're web surfing? I'm with another team, done 61 wu. Since update 1.2 done 2 'advanced' wu.

This advanced feature should be good for the ppl that do alot of folding. Might take longer but sounds like it will be helping in different ways.
As is stated in everything, it only uses idle CPU's, as in doing nothing. Would be good if it could take advantage of unused power but that is yet to come I guess. Why not just surf the web on your computer?

Winnie says:

Technically web browsing should be possible, as checking stats in F@H is done with the web browser.

Woo, completed my 100th WU today!

thats what i was thinking, if its possible to browse team pages etc. shouldn't they be able to provide web-browsing ATLEAST? i'd like to see folding running in the background of every PS3 program except maybe for games.

Congrats Winnie on your 100th! Beaudy!

"Folding@Home is an application which you can download for your PS3s which does medical research on protein folding for Stanford University. Further knowledge of how protein molecules behave will hopefully lead to cures for diseases such as Alzheimers, Hungtintons as well as some forms of cancer. Please contribute as much as you can, as every bit of help counts."

Copy pasted from my first post in this thread.

And advanced mode doesn't seem too different from normal mode, although I think WUs take 8 hours and a half.

ok, so just update your PS3's firmware (follow manual for these instructions if u dont know how), download the folding@home program and then found in the network section down bottom will be the folding@home program. (you can also helpout with your PC by doing google search & downloadin appropiate software from the official site)

one you done all that, basically you are just donating your PS3 as part of a distributed supercomputer. the program only uses your internet when it downloads your 'work unit'(what your PS3 researches) & when it sends the work unit back to Stanford's servers. becoz the PS3 is such a powerful computer, it will complete a work unit in about 8hrs. as long as you complete & return a work unit within 5 days off first downloading it, you will be credited with approximately 287 points. This builds your stats within the MyPS3 team. the PS3 program has good detailed info on how to enter ur username and team no. and so just put billz1508 if ya like and 60766 as your team no.

Then you can keep postin your results on this thread, we'll help ya out with any troubles.

Cheers - Thanks for joining in on such a good cause.

i've been watchin the Projects total TeraFLOPS for a while & for the last couple of weeks its been as low as the high 500s, hovering around high 600s for quite a while. Now its jumped up to 808 within half a week! Im pretty sure just yesterday it was around 740 or so, but neway, the main reason is that theres been approx 5000 more 'active' Playstation 3 participants in the last week or two! considering there was usually around 25,000, to get above 30,000 active folders is a really big increase.

keep it goin guys, spread the word & we can get this Folding@Home crackin on curing those diseases!

As in use the internet on any computer while F@H is running, or using the web browser on the PS3 while F@H is running?

For the first, yes, the second, no.
