Killzone 2 Review - 9/10

Killzone 2, Is a First Person Shooter (FPS) that has a very different feel to most other FPS games. This is in a sense that, Your Character, Sev, weighs a bit, and so does his weapons. You will notice that the first time you jump into action, with reduced speeds on walking and walking backwards, but gives a more realistic feel in that sense. Killzone 2 continues after Killzone and Killzone Liberation for the PSP. You Play as Sergeant Thomas Sev , and your job is to help the ISA capture the leader of the helghast army, Scolar Visari, and bring the war to a halt. The ISA are sent to the Helghast planet, Helghan. Killzone 2 shows the true power of a ps3 developed console exclusive.

If you are a fan of the first person shooter genre, and you are in need of a new game, I would strongly suggest this game to you if you are over 15 or have your parents permission. The Game is rated MA 15 + with strong battle violence, coarse language, gaming experience may change online. If you are not 15 or are a parent reading this review, reconsider purchasing this for the little kiddies. Now, we move on to the review.

The Graphics –
One of the key points in Killzone 2 is to show off its graphics and textures. The world of helghan is pretty interesting, but you can say it’s mostly the same, as in dull environments and greyish war torn areas. But that dosent ruin the fun at all, you can’t notice that if you’re battling against a squad of helghast troops. The visuals are quite good, you can say above average to great. 720 P seems pretty good; well that’s what I’m playing it on, so yeah. The game has lots of blood too. Whenever you shoot a helghast soldier the blood just comes right out in a sort of 3-d manner. The game has very unique menus. The game flickers when you are changing through things, and when you load the game as in campaign, a loading screen 3-d map can be controlled by the SIXAXIS motion. That’s pretty cool to keep you distracted whilst the game loads. The weapons look great, and you can get screen glare in game from looking towards the sun, which again, adds realism to KZ2. Nothing much that I can say that is negative in this field, so far so great!

The Sound –
The main thing in an FPS is gun fire. Killzone 2 has that, and more. Full surround sound when you go in all guns blazing, all firing noises come at you in different directions. The voiceovers are pretty good, with the occasional swear words. The scenery sound is great. And the voices of the Helghast soldiers are really interesting. So , if you do own a surround sound system , get ready for Killzone 2 ! Headset chat is great in the online modes, with the sqad chat ability, so no one else can hear what your going to do in your next move.

The Game play –

Killzone 2 has amazing game play, whether it is on the single player mode or on the online mode, which I will discuss next. The game play is pretty solid, and it feels different to the other shooters out there. The protagonist you portray is weighed down with his arson of weapons, which is limited to one primary and one secondary. Similar to COD4. The Aiming system is great, and the weapon zooming is great as well, and you have the option to tap the zoom button and let go and it will hold, so you can walk around in zoom mode making it easier for head shots or whatever. The covering system is great, you can lock on to nearly anything virtually. Then, whilst holding the cover button you can move left or right to get to the end of cover and peek out on an angle and kill those evil helghast soldiers. There are a variety of things you will see in the game, and the actual map of Helghan is pretty damn good. Its a war-torn planet, to sum it up. Team Mates. The next best thing that has been added and improved in Killzone 2 . Your team mates actually help you out in the most intense situations. You are not the only target to the Helghast soldiers, your team mates are too. This adds a sense of team work, and means you don’t have to do all the dirty work by yourself, as done in nearly all FPS games. The health system is great, no more health bars, instead it, the more you get shot the more the screen is splattered with blood, and the more the screen goes grey. The controls are O.K , but some gamers will prefer changing it around a little. For example, I play Killzone 2 on the Alternative 2 Control. This configuration is similar to Call of duty 4. From helghast troopers to big bosses you surely don’t want to miss out on the story mode, which can take 10+ hours to complete, and to make it better, you can always go back on the hard mode and unlock more trophies. So you wont find this game building dust with your other collection of games

The Multiplayer –
The multiplayer on killzone 2 is great. From simplistic modes like team death matches to objective modes, you will find this highly addictive. There are several classes which are unlocked during certain stages or ranks. Unfortunately, they are all locked at first, but as you progress things come to you, new classes and other nifty features, Such as creating your own clan or creating squads.

The multiplayer, in a way, is what most of the gamers want out of this game. I know that the single player is amazing, but the multiplayer? Its like the main course of a 3 course meal. The minute you step foot on the battlefield you know that there is no time to fool around. You will be relied on heavily by your fellow team mates, in working together to achieve the selected mode. Modes vary throughout the map, where some hosts can choose to select ones they want or don’t want. The online, I must say, is very tidy in terms of the layout. You can select the region you want to associate with (they have an Australian portal) and you can host your own games and even put passwords, which is a great feature for clan training as such. Clans are another big part of killzone 2. Now, on the killzone website, is a fully refurbished site which will allow you too see all your online stats and your clan stats. You can enter tournaments , challenge other clans, and check the leaderboards. Its very good in terms of online. The ISA vs Helghast is great. There isn’t really much disadvantage for either side. Lag. One major question. Does it lag? No. Simple as that. If you select the Australian region, and play a server, it wont lag (or i didn’t experience any lag as such) during gameplay. I can say that once you have finished single player or just jump right into the online realm you wont want to leave. Now with updates regularly and the choices to play ranked or unranked (bots optional) you will not have any reason not to play warzone!

Overall –

Killzone 2 is an all round shooter with very big strengths on its side, and a great long lasting multiplayer which will keep many happy until the next FPS. You surely don’t want to miss out on Killzone 2. If you aren’t sure about paying your hard earned cash for it, then go and rent it or download the demo which will give you a better understanding on what killzone 2 really is. In my opinion, Killzone 2 is a well crafted game that has a long lasting appeal, with downloadable content which will enhance online game play even further, which makes you want to play it over and over again. This is a must have for any FPS lover. Now, Go out there and Buy or Rent Killzone 2!
