Transformers Revenge of the Fallen Review - 7/10
Transformers Revenge of the Fallen is a thrid person shooter game based on the action movie of the same name, thr previous Transformers game recieved negative reviews and was found in bargain bins pretty soon, is this game the same?
Story
The story is loosly based on the movie, for those who havent watched the film, this game wont be giving much of the spoilers mainly because you dont understand half the things the Autobots/Deceptecons say in the cutscenes, Ill explain more about this at the audio section of the review. The story mainly outlines the mainpoints of the film, most of the story is told in the cutscenes where the Autobots/Deceptecons (depending on who you choose) stand around a giant map of the Earth and talk about the story after each mission you complete. While the Autobots missions dont add anything new in terms of story the Deceptecon missions are intresting to play through as you go through the game seeing what would happen if the bad guys won
Audio
The audio is a mix of good and bad, the sound effects in game are really good and work very well such as the sound effect as you transform makes it really sound like its real, the explosions sound great, the guns are loud and clear, the soundtrack is fast paced and works well with the game and Optimus Prime and Megatrons voice acting are very well done, but this brings me on to the bad, voice acting is a total faliure, while I did mention Optimus Prime and Megatrons voices being very well done well thats just it, the rest of the Transformers mumble there speeches and if you can be bothered to turn up the volume to hear what there trying to say be sure to turn it down straight after because you never know when Optimus/Megatron will decide to speak and deafen you with there almighty voices and Shia and Megans voices seem like there forced in by being so plain and no emotion and also, while the soundtrack is amazing it does have its own problem, if a song is playing while you fight, once you defeat the enemies the song changes beat to be a bit happier but if you see a few enemies after just defeating a few the soundtrack stops for a few seconds and then comes back only to have the happy song play again which can really stress you out because you come to miss the hardcore music.
Gameplay
The controls may seem a bit complex at first but as you play through a few missions you start to get used to them and by then you realise that the controls are actually quite perfect for a game like this, its pretty simple, you can enter 3 modes, Movement Mode, Weapons Mode or Vehicle Mode, by holding L2 you enter weapon mode where you aim with your chosen weapon, Vehicle mode which is entered by holding R2 makes your Transformer transform into there unique vehicle depedning on the Transformer your playing as, and Movement mode is just moving the left stick to run around, by the time you finish the campaign as either team you'll have mastered most of the controls and will be able to execute the flawlessly, although there are many moves and combos you can perform in the game most of the time you will be spamming the R2 button rapidly pressing it shooting at the opposing Transformers, although this does ruin the game it doesnt completly stop the game from being any good, each Transformer has there own set of weapons which does stop the fights from getting to stale and the continues attempts of performing cool stunts does make the gameplay more enjoyable.
Multiplayer
The biggest addition to the game is its multiplayer feature featuring 5 game modes and 19 charectors each with there own uniqure transformation and weapons (9 Autobots and 10 Decepticons), the 5 games modes are:
Deathmatch - Standard free for all match with person with most kills wins
Team Deathmatch - Standard team based war with the team with most kills wins
Control Points - Team based objectives match where the team with the most captured control points wins
One Shall Stand - Team based objectives match where one player from either team is randomly picked to become the leaders (Megatron and Optimus Prime depending on which team you are in) while others battle to take out the opposing leader
Battle For The Shards - Capture the flag based game where both teams fight to retreive the most shards to there base
Surprisingly enough the multiplayer is pretty addictive and with the 19 Transformers to choose from you have a wide variety with eahc Transformer having there own tactic, the game modes are varied and are all very fun, the game has a clever system of not loading detail of the map which is far away from you which makes for a lag free match every time
Replay Value
The game has many unlockables which make you do certain things such as driving 500 km with Bumblebee to unlock a vary of things such as costumes, videos, art gallerys and other things, this really adds to the replay value having you replay levels to unlock new features, the trophies for the game are pretty easy but some are difficult which adds to the replay value while you try to collect all trophies, after finishing the singleplayer theres not much you can do there but multiplayer will keep you entertained for quite some time
Conclusion
Transformers Revenge of the Fallen is not game of the year but it is definatly worth the money, single player is a fun playthrough and online will keep you playing for some time to come.
