differences between kes 400a and kes 400aaa

In my 40gig ps3 I have a kes400a laser on a kem 400aaa deck.
when my laser ****ed up they replaced it with what I assume is the same thing.

however it now doesn't read cd's or ps1 games. so what is wrong.

I'm looking to reenable this function. I have heard that the kes400aaa is the one that does this. I have tried changing the laser into a another ps3 using it's drive board. and it still does not read the cd's so It must be the actual laser not performing this.

If anyone has the info it would be appreciated

so you were unable to get them to re-enable it ? did you ask them seeing they did the job ?

they said that they updated the drive firmware which disables it to make it last longer. but that I have confirmed is BS cos I just put my blu-ray into another ps3 using the driver for that ps3 and it still would not read the ps1 games or cd's so I'm thinking maybe a kes400a does not read cd's or ps1 games, and the kes400aa does.

so basically the repairers are using the wrong laser for PS3 repairs ? they need to use the exact same laser that has come out of the PS3.

yeah but apparently they are prone to failure, and by using the a instead of the aaa the are guranteeing that It won't come back to them under their 3month warranty.

yeah that sucks, they should actually advise you that you wont be able to play PS1 titles or audio on disc before doing the repair.

ok so the infrared part of the diode isnt working or this laser assembly is lacking it all together.i have not heard of a PS3 that cant play audio CDs you sure these guys are not bullshitting to you?

yeah well, me either mate. it can still play dvd's. blurays , ps3's and it reads the ps2 games, just deoesn't play them obviously.

I'm yet to open up the ps3 blu-ray to look at the laser in it. but I know a KEs-400a came out of it and it was playing ps1 games. and cd's. sO i'm lost as to what they have done to it. but I must admit it hasn't faultered since and not be able to play ps1 games or cds isn't a big problem but wuold be nice.

just stuck a cd in my 40GB to see if it played and fair enough it does im on the latest firmware too. i dont think they would make a laser assembly that would not include an IR diode to read audio CDs it sounds more logical that the laser diode they put in is faulty.

odd though the IR part of the diode gets less use than the RED or the UV and it isnt working.
