360 has the most Active users, PS3 follows in second
The chart above represents the 'active' users of each console for the first 6 months of 2009. The Nielsen Research data shows that the Xbox 360 is the most actively used console, and the first to beat the PS2 since the company started tracking (US) data in April of 2007.
While sales have been declining worldwide since March, playtime continued to increase through to the month of June, according to the research data. The average gamer played 768 minutes on their consoles during the month of June, up 21% from the same time last year.
The above graph can be a little misleading as it shows the GameCube well above the Wii. What this is actually showing is console owners consistently playing their console. While heaps of people own Wiis not many are playing them on a regular basis.
The second chart shows play time for the month of June, and is a little easier to read. It shows that gamers are finally moving away from the previous generation, despite the PS2 still being a dominate force. The Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 accounted for 50% of playtime in June, while the Xbox, PS2 and GameCube made up only 31%. The remaining 19% was made up by past consoles.
