Lower Back Pain

At the moment, well the last say 1 1/2 weeks my back has been playing up a little bit (coming and going, but nothing major), but I've been keeping up my exercise routine and the whole bit (running every day, which I'm told I shouldnt do anyway)... anyway yesterday when I came back from a walk I was in absolute agony, I cant bend over, etc - and was just wondering if anyone's got any tips for lower back pain? Nothing's really changed since yesterday, I got to go to work in 2 1/2 hrs and I cant afford to call in sick so I'm gonna have to deal with it.

I dont want to go to the doctors either, so any tips from people that have experienced back pain before and relief I would really appreciate it. I did google it but its mostly websites wanting my money for a 7-min quick solution or some crap. I think I've been pushing myself too hard lately, thus reason for the back pain and constant bending at work doesnt help either so that may have contributed.

Thanks dude, and I dont know WiiSUME1up... the pain shoots from near the centre of the back to the buttocks, and it hurts the most say half way between those two. And the pain more or less comes from the absolute centre of the body, so where the spine would be. But it doesnt seem to hurt as much if I stand upright, its only when I sit down or bend in anyway.

I had this sorta thing in year 10 while i was at school i was doing work experience and came down with something like this and i couldn't work after that and **** myself cause i thought i had done something. Turned out too be a strain and they said i was not allowed too pick anything up for weeks.

I would say **** work whats more important calling in a sicky too go doctors or could risk damage and possible operation or even permenant damage.

similar to my mum..
it started with my mum when she was about 35 she was cleaning the top of the garage roof and fell right through the thin roof onto bikes.. i will never forget seeing her fall.. she had smashed her bones in her feet completely and did her back.. im glad she didn't do anymore damage..

The thing is at the moment I'm just putting it down to my exercise routine... I'm quite silly, I dont warm-up before a run, I run/fast walk for at least 40min EVERYDAY and my bed is on an angle lol If the pain is still prevalent by tomorrow i'll go to a doctor, but my sides dont hurt quite as much as last night, so I'm guessing I just over did it and need to rest for a few days (on perhaps another bed lol)

Cold pack that puppy ! !

Mate of mines father is a chiropractor, apparently the biggest mistake people make is trying to stretch the muscles where the pain is and heating it up, cold packs are your friend !

yeah i use to have the pain shoot through my lower leg to buttocks...i couldnt sit as much.....it was a lower disslocated disc for me...physio and ciroprator game me excercises to do and massage....apart from that didnt help until i worked nightfilling for some reason after doing it for awhile the pain went away .... but i still have the disclocated nothing you can do except surgery which would take more than 6 months to recover including pills...

I have a question though, was it a lead-up pain (notice a slight pain over a period of a week or so) or did you just wake up one morning with it, or recognise the pain when it happened straight away?

No... this is only the second day, so its been 24 hrs i've had this pain for now... it only came about after walking for 45min though, so as I said I'm hoping its just a strain (because its not as bad as it was yesterday, I can twist my body now, where as yesterday I couldnt) and that all I need to do is give it a rest. What sort of exercises/treatment did you have for your problem?

yeah basically stretching excercises...i had to go to the gym abit for pilates ROFL...and pills (which didnt help)....well if its only the second day and you just felt it i reckon its just a strain...no biggie i hope...

Sounds like some discs could have come out of place.Dude get to a doctor. I have 2 Slipped Discs in my lower back (for about 14 months now. i slipped down my drive way, was fine for about a week then after going for my daily jog something clicked and bam instant pain, still is) and the sooner you get onto it the better beleive me. i left it and it got so much worse. the doc can give you some pain pills (panadine forte) and get you into a specialist.
im currently on the waiting list to get an operation that hopefully will fix it/help manage it.
Your back is something you dont want to take risks with.
sorry if i sound like im ranting but from experiance it way better to be safe than sorry bro.
One hint though if you get panadene forte go easy on them they are very easy to become dependant on (from experiance)

Thanks for the advice, but I dont want to jump to drastic conclusions just yet. I've had back pain before, but at the moment I really think its just a case of me over doing it in the exercise department. The pain is slowing going away, and in my job it requires a lot of bending over, ducking down, lifting and every now and again climbing up/down ladders... so that no doubt contributed. But I'll see how I go tomorrow... if things havent improved by tomorrow arvo then I'll book myself in to see a doctor.

But the thing about dislocated discs is that the pain remains prevalent, or consistent doesnt it? I mean if a disc had slipped then I wouldnt be getting better right? Like as I said yesterday I could barely move, today I can twist my body without any pain, its just when I bend that remains a problem - but that could simply mean I strained it.

Speaking of which, I've been doing too much (actually, there's no such thing as "too much", lol) back-breaking exercises lately.
