In Prototype You Play as Alex Mercer, a shape shifting creature that has the ability to do almost anything you want him to, from gliding through the air to making a gigantic spike explosion. Prototype starts off with a fast forward in time. You’re able to use all your powers and cause havoc in the streets of New York. Although in the first mission you won’t be able to control which power you use or when it’s still a whole lot of fun slicing and dicing with the claws and blowing up tanks with the hammer fists. As you progress through the game, more secrets about Alex’s Past will be uncovered and you will be able to upgrade continuously throughout the game.
Prototype is a free roaming game meaning you will be able to do the missions when you want. In the meantime you are able to journey throughout New York. Jumping from building to building, running up walls or even starting a miniature war with the marines. Prototype is also a sandbox game, so it is basically your playground. You can run around killing random people, throw cars around, unleash your powers on unsuspecting pray, nearly anything is possible. While in free roam, you are able to collect hints and landmark collectables, which will gradually get more valuable the more you collect. This is an easy way to get experience points to buy upgrades.
If you’re wondering, Prototype plays nothing like Infamous, but playing one doesn’t mean you shouldn’t play the other. Yes there are many similarities’s (gliding, free roaming, sandbox, destroying anything in site with your super amazing powers. ) But overall they are very different.
Alex Mercer regains health with the rather brutal method of killing living things and consuming there bio-mass. After Consuming, you will be able to transform into them. You will look like them, use all there skills and abilities, but at the same time, you will be able to use your abilities aswell. Can’t you imagine an old lady flying around and running up walls?
Now on to the missions. Prototype’s missions are a lot of fun. Most are just, go to the checkpoint. But the battle’s you have when you reach the checkpoint are usually great. A lot of the missions seem very repetative, there are still boss fights and small things like destroying water towers to gain certain substances. But still they are destroying something or infiltrating a base. When you are in free roam, there are also little side missions, like running up a building collecting little orbs on your way or killing as many infected people as you can.
Even though Prototype is a great game there are still some flaws. For instance, the dodge roll. Alex’s only real form of defense. It can be useful for getting out of sticky situations but when your being constantly attacked it’s a bit hard to get out of harms way. Another flaw is the fact that the army doesn’t seem to find a man that can jump 40 feet and land in front of them from absolutely no where unusual. They may say things like “ I think we’ve got something here” But they don’t do anything about it. I guess this is more of an advantage but it is still a bit stupid.
Overall:
Apart from the few flaws, prototype is a great game. Jumping around New York is a whole lot fun. You have so much freedom in prototype. Throwing Cars and using your whip fist to chop people in half at will is very enjoyable. Although it really gets fun once you upgrade to the point when you can steal APC’s and completely destroy New York. The upgrade system is a great asset to the game. As you complete certain missions more upgrades will be unlocked. Some of the game hasn’t been worked on enough, which can sometimes get annoying, but once it has passed you can still get back into the game easily and you will forget about it 5 minutes later.
Gameplay:
The freedom to fly around New York and kill people at will? What more could you ask for? Prototype is not for the faint-hearted as there is a lot of gore. But the way they use the gore, like body surfing is truly amazing. Although having to ALWAYS use a discuise and some parts being a bit unusual get a bit annoying. You won’t really think about it that much. The missions seem to get a bit repetitive and sometimes hard at parts you will get used to the feel of the game quickly.

Graphics:
Alex Mercer looks awesome, and everyone would agree on that. But some graphics are really plain and the develepors have not put much work into some parts. For instance, the buildings, the curtains look really unusual and most buildings seem to be perfectly flat. Probably 95% of cars are taxi’s, which is stupid because they seem to be a bit rushed. The hives aren’t very detailed and are a bit dull. But overall most things seem to go unnoticed when your concentrating on killing the military.

Sound:
The sound affects are good and most powers seem to have fairly good sounds. The voices are good and the soundtrack is fine.

Value:
The game will take you a while to complete. Definetely if your not used to games like this. You will be able to Free Roam continuesly and when you’ve upgraded and bought all of your powers, It will Be fun causing havoc in New York over and over and over again.
