PS2 Backwards compatibilty?

Rumour or possibility? Does that mean it will read my old PS2 CDs or will it be only through the PSN if it happens? If it happens is it likely to be in the next firmware update?

If you remember the original Ps3's did have backwards compatibilty. So if you are actually looking for one, you could probably still buy them off Ebay or something

I haven't seen anything about Sony thinking about putting backwards compatibility back into newer consoles. Anything anyone says is really just baseless rumour, speculation, or wishful thinking, sorry.
If you want a PS3 that can play PS2 games you'll just have to try to get an old 60GB PS3.

i thought there was some big thing a few weeks back about them working out how to emulate them with software only, and its looking a lot more likely now. or maybe im wrong.

Old PS3 -> Hardware emulation. I assume what PCKid's referring to is software emulation via a firmware update.

I'm sure it's possible. It's just whether Sony decides it's worth their time to invest in the feature.

The way I see it, if possible, it probably won't be 100% compatibility. But I'd love to see Sony prove me wrong!

Quick answer...Yes.

If Sony were to released a firmware update which prevents/stops the original 60gb PS3's from playing PS2 games then there would be a mass public outcry around the world! And hatred towards Sony.

Only the US and Japan got hold of 'hardware emulation' for the bc PS3's. European's and the rest received 'software emulation' at best.

Sony recently lodged a patent for software emulation of the ps2, it will most likely be to sell ps2 games on the psn rather then allowing you to play your own games.

Can we say that they're just legally putting a patent on it so that they can lawfully sue anybody who dares to use it "illegally"?

Pc emulator developers don't care about patents, and I can see any other platform attempting to emulate the ps2.

Maybe a symbolic 'placing of the flag', there is no money in a bookmark patent. Its clear people are clamoring to play ps2 games on the ps3. I call ps2 emulation on the ps3 by xmas 2010, most likely download only ps2 emulation. Which wont please those with epic ps2 libraries.

some person from "china" or the likes will find the exploit sooner or later if sony doesn't release something that would enable ps3 users to play ps2 games....

they've done it with the ps1, ps2, xbox, 360's, psp's, heck even ds and the iphone 3g so yeh they'll make it possible if sony doesnt do anything about it...electronics are way cheap in china so i guess for them it would cost peanuts....

I need PS2 compatibility. My PS2 is stuck at my cousins house and I don't think I'll ever get it back. But I have so many PS2 games sitting on my shelf that are unplayable. And I cbf buying another PS2 console to be honest.

I'm pretty certain I read somewhere they are going to do it using some engine but the name escapes me. Pretty sure it started with the letter K but that's all I remember. Might have been on Loot-Ninja?

As I was reading through my rather extensive and scary list of site feeds yesterday evening, I stumbled upon this post up over at Scrawl. One of their writers works at GameStop and had a visit from their friendly neighborhood Sony rep recently. I would advise against taking this as fact until we hear something more official, but the Sony rep was reported as pointing out that both a price drop and backwards compatibility for our sleek, sexy PS3s are coming soon.

This really doesn’t strike me as surprising, considering all the talk about Sony patenting Emotion Engine emulation technology (this is what is under the hood of a PS2) for integration into the PS3’s cell processors via a firmware update. Could this be the fruits of Sony’s labor? If this is indeed the case, let’s just hope Sony’s definition of “soon” isn’t the same as Blizzard’s.
